Professor Emeritus Stphen R. Kellert of Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies sets out five conditions for the effective practice of biophilic design, with each underscoring what is—and is not— biophilic design.
Innovation and attention to detail are evident throughout the Four Seasons Hotel Boston and Private Residences.
We’re delighted to announce that www.thegooddesignstudio.com has a fierce new homepage. At The University of Utah, the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute has been supporting students with startup aspirations by providing grants, advisors, and the ability to realize ideas into prototypes at no cost. But when the institute celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2012, its administration wanted to take the program to the next level.
Recently, there has been much press about open office plans, mostly about how bad these work environments are and that they don’t work.
There’s little doubt today’s commercial interiors—from corporate offices to hospitals, schools and hotels—look and function better than ever. It’s no wonder either; project teams tend to focus a great deal of attention on efficiency and appearance to ensure occupant comfort and productivity, particularly in the workplace.
Raise a glass and join the celebration! The ASSA ABLOY “Finish Strong” exhibit will showcase our stunning, new Champagne, Titanium, Rose Gold, Carbon, and Dark Bronze PVD custom finishes, as well as our distinctive oxidized silver, brass and copper plated custom finishes. Take-home samples will be available for your vision boards.
We have A LOT going on at the show this year that you won’t want to miss. Door hardware solutions that not only provide premiere security for healthcare, hospitality, education and office spaces, but also provide the ‘WOW factor’ to tell occupants they are in a special space!

I’ve been wondering: who typically selects the commercial doors and hardware for the projects you’re working on? I really want to know. In fact, I’ve been asking this question in the Architectural Practices and End User Organizations I’ve visited across the U.S.
Based on the responses I’ve gotten, I can tell you who’s not typically selecting commercial doors and hardware: Designers.
Let the countdown begin! One week til the 2018 AIA Conference on Architecture at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. It’s a “Super Bowl” for Good Design, and something my colleagues and I look forward to every year.
From healthier, people-centric designed offices to increasingly flexible workspaces, Work Design Magazine’s very own, Bob Fox, shares seven workplace trend predictions he expects to see in 2018.
The use of color in healthcare settings has evolved over the last five years, influenced by a variety of factors, including global design trends, consumer research, patient satisfaction studies and market drivers from other segments. When it comes to healthcare facilities, we’re seeing less of the stereotypical institutional colors, and more healthcare systems that are influenced by residential design, as well as taking color cues from the hospitality and commercial markets.
The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies presented ASSA ABLOY with a 2017 GOOD DESIGN™ award for Attack Resistant Openings in the Building Materials category.

Day two of NeoCon East 2017 is here and I was finally able to sneak away from our ASSA ABLOY Mobile Showroom to cruise the show floor. I blogged previously about the importance of NeoCon East as a means for collaborating and sharing ideas with our architectural and interior design “inspirers.” But there are LOTS of ways to be inspired at this show, and that includes by other manufacturers. Great as it is to be ASSA ABLOY, it’s not all about us!
Looking back on the first day of NeoCon East 2017, my biggest takeaway is a feeling of overwhelming gratitude to the building, design and construction professionals who stopped by the ASSA ABLOY Mobile Showroom.
At NeoCon East 2017, ASSA ABLOY is highlighting a number of door and hardware products that tip otherwise commodity solutions in favor of “the inspirers” of good design. Products that take the necessary and make them look extraordinary. Products that give that “aha!” moment.
Architects, designers and end-users alike agree that all-glass doors are fantastic. Glass doors allow for clear views and natural light, and they help showcase the very best in modern design. And when treated properly, glass doors provide for good sound control and noise reduction — but they also present many unique challenges.
Noise can cripple an environment, so acousticians are using immersive sound technology to more accurately predict and prevent a barrage of distractions.
Aesthetics are playing a greater role in commercial environments than ever before and interior designers have greater influence on what's being built. ASSA ABLOY provides a broad array of decorative door hardware solutions which enables design professionals to incorporate their aesthetic vision into any door opening.
Organizations have become heavily invested in designing “beautiful” office spaces to boost innovation and maximize collaboration, as the office becomes more important than ever in today’s tech-driven economy.
We all know great design when we experience it. Good building design is functional, durable, sustainable and pleasing to the eye. But great design can't exist without deliberate intent, careful planning, and thoughtful implementation.
I ran across the innovative solution in the adjacent photograph during a recent business trip, and I had to share.
I travelled to Orlando in May for the American Institute of Architects Conference on Architecture 2017. ASSA ABLOY parked its Decorative Opening Solutions mobile showroom on the exhibition floor and for two-and-a-half blissful days my colleagues and I connected and conversed among displays of doors and hardware, with friends old and new.
Color’s prominent role in wayfinding has become a focus in architecture. Humans use color as a primary means of sorting and grouping objects: think about the uniforms of sports teams or the coloration of prescription medicine pills.
BIM is not just for architects. The concept behind BIM is not new and 3D modeling goes back 30 years or more.
